Storage
Tips
Let's face it: wine is wonderful. Not only does
it taste smashing, and is beautiful to look at and to smell, but it
also carries a mystique with it that has existed for millennia. It
is no small wonder that wine has been associated with gods, temples,
and religions, along with numerous rites and even secular ceremonies
for as long as the substance has existed. Yet there is a somewhat
tedious life to wine, that of its proper storage. This article will
offer some basic wine storage tips to this end.
First, wine is meant to be enjoyed, to be seen. For this reason many
people are apt to leave their bottles of merlot or burgundy in their
kitchens out in plain view for all to see. This is perfectly
understandable and acceptable, as it generates stimulating
conversations about viniculture. However, as light can have a nasty
effect on our lovely juice, it is best to leave only wine that will
be consumed within a few weeks in the kitchen wine rack.
This can be part of a rotating system in which wines that won't be
drunk for awhile (probably the bulk of a collection), be kept out of
sight, preferably in the dark, possibly a basement. One of the
important wine storage tips with this regard is to maintain the
humidity levels where the bulk of wines are kept. This is much due
to the effects of moisture on cork, which, contrary to standard
belief, are susceptible to wear and tear. Subsequently, the wine
inside is also prone to disturbance.
Of course, wine storage tips abound all over the world, and rightly
so. One aspect that is often ignored is what to do after a bottle is
opened yet much is left over. Throwing wine -particularly good wine
down the drain is not a comfortable thought for most. Of course, one
can simply put the cork tightly back on and drink it soon
thereafter. However, in cases where the wine will go undrunk for
more that 3 or 4 days, there is always nitrogen. Nitrogen hoses can
be fitted to a bottle, and the gas lightly pressurizes the inner
bottle, thus preventing oxygen from putting the liquid to ruin.
Yet of all wine storage tips, the greatest might simply be to not
store the wine for so long that it goes undrunk. Wine is meant to be
tasted, sipped, gulped, enjoyed. So enjoy.
